For decades mainstream comics publishers were subject to the provisions of the Comics Code Authority if they wanted their comics to have the seal of approval in order to be sold on news stands and in local grocery and drug stores. The power of the Comics Code didn’t affect underground comix or magazines that were for adults, and it certainly was unable to travel back in time before its existence to censor comics before 1956. And on occasion it turned a blind eye like when Jimmy Olsen did drag.
