Zoe Laveau is a descendant of the powerful New Orleans voodoo queen Marie Laveau, and is part of a long line of female magic users. Unlike most of her family Zoe struggled with magic and she turned to a dark magic user named Gaslamp, who sells wishes like drugs, in order try and bring her skills up to her parents’ expectations. The plan backfired as continued use of the dark magic took a terrible toll on her and Zoe died.
Her parents took Zoe’s body to the grave of Marie Laveau to request help from her spirit to save their daughter. Marie Laveau succeeded in restoring Zoe to life, but she could not reverse all the damage done to her by the dark magics, so Zoe was left with an undead zombie-like appearance. She uses a mystical amulet to hide her true form and appear human.
Zoe is a student at the Strange Academy, a school for the mystic arts. She originally kept her true form hidden from her classmates–but her roommate Dessy had the ability to see through the illusion. As a demon from Limbo, Dessy was not bothered by Zoe’s true appearance but she agreed to keep her secret and the two girls eventually developed romantic feelings for each other and began dating.
Zoe eventually revealed the truth of her origins to her friends and classmates one night while they were out exploring New Orleans and visited the grave site of Marie Laveau.
