Dallas Gibson is a mutant whose power is a ‘living shadow’ that he can merge with, granting him enhanced strength and speed. The first time Dallas’ power manifested it scared his grandfather so badly that he had a heart attack. Dallas was then enrolled in the Xavier Institute where he was trained in the use of his powers and he chose the code name ‘Specter’, since he felt anything with the word ‘shadow’ in it would be cliche.

Specter was one of the many millions of mutants to lose their powers on “M-Day” when a reality altering spell depowered the vast majority of Earth’s mutant population. He eventually got his powers restored a few years later, after he became a citizen of the mutant nation of Krakoa and underwent the Crucible, a ritual ceremony where depowered mutants fight to be killed and reborn as true mutants again. Since regaining his powers Specter has allegedly become a bit over-eager to use them, potentially making him a bit reckless.

He has started dating fellow mutant Graymalkin and the two of them enrolled in Bishop’s War College program. They were placed in Bishop’s new squad alongside Gimmick, D-Cel and Kafka. Dallas has discovered that he can use his own powers to boost those of his boyfriend — Graymalkin becomes super-strong in darkness, and Specter can project his living shadow to cover Graymalkin.

Specter’s first identified appearance was in New Mutants vol.2 #10 by Nunzio DeFilippis, Christina Weir and Carlo Barberi, but he had a non-speaking cameo as an unidentified background character a few issues earlier in New Mutants #3 by DeFilippis, Weir and Kieron Grant. He was outed in Marvel’s Voices: Pride 2023.
