Rachel Deering may be mostly unknown to the great majority of comics fandom, as she was to me until coming across a recent Comics Allliance interview, but writers Bill Willinghamd and Joshua Hale Fialkov, whose “I, Vampire” I think is underrated, have noticed Deering and she’s one of the creators featured in the Womanthology book that had a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign. The “Lesbian Werewolf Epic” in the heading of Christopher Sebela’s interview is what grabbed my attention. Sure, comics have more werewolves than you can shake a stick at, and a fair amount of lesbian characters, but lesbian werewolves? And it’s an atypical love story with an ambiguous historical setting with promises of the kind of horror elements I appreciate (not all the hack and slash gore, which is fine if you like it).
