Marcus Wetherell is a trans man who works as a reporter for Daily Bugle TV. His work has brought him into contact with the students of the Avengers Academy on multiple occasions as he has been in the field, live reporting on events like the new Sinister Six ransacking various corporations in Manhattan, and Cherry Crane’s attack on the Arnie Roth Community Center.
Marcus is dating Justin Jin, aka Kid Juggernaut. Due to concerns about protecting his loved ones, as well as the secret identities of some of his classmates, Justin was originally reluctant about revealing his secret identity to Marcus even though Marcus had clearly already figured it out. Marcus reluctantly played along to respect Justin’s wishes, though the pretense became increasingly flimsy as their dates were frequently interrupted by incidents with various super-villains.
Marcus was abducted from his studio by Hydra forces in the middle of a live broadcast, as Hydra were rounding up various “undesirables”–visible minorities; literal alien beings, etc–to force out of the country. As an openly trans man and an outspoken opponent of Hydra’s fascist agendas, Marcus was a prime target for them. He was brought before their leader Sin, daughter of the Red Skull, who delighted in tormenting Marcus and taunting him about finding out his “real” name before she was done with him.
Marcus was rescued by the Avengers Academy cohort, and it was during this rescue that Kid Juggernaut finally dropped the act and told Marcus to call him “Justin”.
Marcus is the son of Manoli Wetherell, a journalist who has made recurring appearances over the years in Chris Claremont’s X-Men and Fantastic Four stories, and who is a fictionalized version of a real life NPR correspondent and engineer. He has been inspired to follow in her footsteps.
