Gay Previews October 2014

Here it is August and the dog days of summer have finally arrived here after a nice, long string of days in the 70s and low 80s. School just seemed to let out and classes are starting already for students. How’s your summer going?

A couple things make me shout “Take my money!” One is Arrow Season 2 on DVD and Bluray but I think this will go on my Christmas wish list. The other is Mike Madrid’s Vixes, Vamps & Vipers booklooking at a number of Golden Age villainesses. Look for it under Exteriminating Angel Press.

ambiguouslygayduoThe Ambiguously Gay Duo Monitor Mate on page 550 and selling for $11.99 in this month’s Previews caught my eye too. Amazon has what looks to be the same thing only branded as a San Diego Comic Con exclusive with a $50 price tag to match. Save yourself some money and order this from your comic shop! Here’s how it’s described in Previews: “That’s right, friend-of-friend! It’s Saturday Night Live’s Ambiguously Gay Duo, Ace and Gary! Straight from SNL and the hilarious Saturday Night Live cartoon that never would have passed Saturday morning censors, comes the crime fighting Ambiguously Gay Duo — Ace and Gary — saving the city from a bunch of gawkers that can’t keep their eyes off them. Bif Bang Pow! presents the Saturday Night Live: The Ambiguously Gay Duo Monitor Mate Bobble Head! The exclusive 4-inch scale mini bobble head sticks to the top of your computer monitor!”

So hey. A few words about being an Amazon affiliate again. Sure, there’s a small commission on each sale you make if you make purchases by clicking any of the links in this list or through that widget thing in the sidebar or if you bookmark the link below. Supporting your local comic shop and bookstore is really important too. Being an Amazon affiliate isn’t just about commissions on specifically linked books and DVDs though, so don’t be shy about using these links to make your other non-book related purchases!

MEMETIC #1 $4.99 Page 291
James Tynion IV and Eryk Donovan
After launching James Tynion IV’s The Woods to much acclaim, we were eager to see what other ideas he had. When James, one of our favorite new voices in comics pitched us MeMeTiCas a tale of the apocalypse in three parts, we were sold! Memetic is truly an event comic–three oversized 48 page issues detailing the end of the world over the course of three days, and a wholly unique take on the disaster genre. Much like his work on The Woods, James Tynion IV and fantastic newcomer Eryk Donovan (The House in the Wall)will bring horror to a whole new generation and fans of J-horror films like Uzumaki and The Ring. A meme is an idea that starts with an individual, and then spreads throughout multiple persons and potentially entire societies. Richard Dawkins suggests a meme’s success comes from its effectiveness to the host. But history shows that destructive memes can spread just as rapidly through society. Memetic shows the progression of a weaponized meme that leads to the utter annihilation of the human race within 72 hours. The root of this apocalypse is a single image on the internet. A “meme” in the popular sense; a meme that changes everything.

Bissette, to celebrate Vampirella’s 45th Anniversary by crafting five issues of twisted tales, bizarre bedtime stories, and fearsome fables in the tradition of the original Warren magazines, each featuring everyone’s favorite sexy, kick-ass vampire-turned-monster hunter. And, boy, have they delivered! While exploring the Transylvanian castle she’s recently inherited, Vampirella discovers a strange old book of “Feary Tales” that seems oddly familiar. Upon opening it, she is sucked inside its pages and lands in a weird alternate reality, where she is compelled by a disembodied voice calling itself The Storyteller to live out each of the ‘feary tales’ if she ever hopes to return to reality. In the first issue, Vampirella is surprised to discover herself married to an infamous wife-killer in “Bluebeard’s Blood” by Devin Grayson (Nightwing, Batman: Gotham Knights, Titans), and then finds herself both the belle and the bete of the ball in “Cinderella?
