Chicago area comics nerds and visitors looking for something comics oriented should check out CAKE (Chicago Alternative Comics Expo) this weekend! CAKE is a weekend long festival celebrating indepedent comics bringing together over 200 cartoonists. And the cost? Nothing! Admission is free!
At three years old, CAKE’s schedule of events shows promising growth for the show. A few activities take place Friday night (tonight!) in various venues such as Quimby’s, Graham Cracker Comics and DePaul School of Cinema in the Loop, Dino’s Pizza in Wicker Park, and Co-Prosperity Sphere on the Southside. LGBT cartoonists include Edie Fake, Elisha Lim, Eric Kostiuk Williams, Tony Breed, Alex Dahm, Jay Fuller, Nicole J. Georges, Laurel Lynn Leake, MariNaomi, Chad Sell, and Sasha Steinberg. My apologies to anyone that I overlooked who should be listed. Panels include Edie Fake, Brian Kostiuk Williams, and Elisha Lim talking about Magikomix, Queer Comics and Visionary Cartooning on Saturday afternoon.
The main event takes place at the Center on Halsted. Lots of useful transportation info listed here. My recommendation is not to drive because parking in the area is and has been for many years a challenging proposition.
