Baz Hall is an FBI agent in The Deviant series by James Tynion and Joshua Hixon. Hall has been called in on a horrific murder that happened after hours at the Macy’s store in downtown Chicago. Under normal circumstances a murder like this would be solely under the jurisdiction of the local Chicago police. What makes this murder an exception to that rule is crime scene evidence which points to a person living 90 miles north in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Several details about this murder recall the Santa Claus murders which happened 50 years before in a Gimbels department store in Milwaukee. Following this lead Hall travels to question someone close to the suspect. Further incidents will complicate the investigation though.
Hall possesses a calm and collected demeanor and is as principled an agent as they come. Hall is equally self assured and unafraid to buck his superiors when he has hunches about people or a case he’s working on. Tynion reveals very little about Hall’s personal life. His sexuality comes up during a conversation with another important character. Hall admits to being gay “at least a little bit.” A hand manicure with green gel polish on his nails is an essential part of Hall’s look and he very much enjoys when toxic straight men are made uncomfortable by this.
